Kato USA Model Train Products HO EMD #8023 SD40-2 Mid Burlington Northern Standard
As a prototype, the SD40-2 was the most popular second-generation diesel with sales of over 3000 in the U.S. and more than 700 in Canada. There were many variations of this popular diesel because of the long production run – "Mid" versions had large anti-climbers (the front porch area of the locomotive) and deck mounted ditch lights necessary for meeting modern FRA standards. The BN amassed a fleet of 827 SD40-2's between 1972 and 1980, starting out hauling coal trains out of Wyoming's Powder River Basin and then started moving transcontinental freight between the West Coast and the Midwest.

Kato USA Model Train Products HO EMD #5072 SD40-2 Mid Production Santa Fe
In early 1988, Santa Fe began relocating the headlights on its power from above the cab windows to the nose in an attempt to reduce glare reflected into the cab during foggy or blizzard conditions. This made the Mid Production Santa Fe SD40-2s (and their descendents in the BNSF) different in form to their cousins. Over the years, other changes were made, including the migration of the air horn further away from the cab and the installation of air conditioners to make the operation of their SD40-2s a more pleasant experience for the crew.
